SHOW PONIES

POETRY WITH THE VOLUME RIGHT UP AND THE VIBES OFF THE SCALE

13-14 SEPTEMBER 2024
ŌTEPOTI | DUNEDIN

ARE YOU READY?

I’m bringing Show Ponies back to New Zealand Young Writers Fest with the inaugural PONY CAMP: two free workshops and a performance showcase for creative rangatahi in the heart of Ōtepoti | Dunedin.

Are you a driven young creative person?

Are you – or do you want to be – an original writer, choreographer, or composer?

Do you want to test what you can do with your creativity?

Do you want to get on the stage?

and, critically,

Are you aged 15 to 18 and do you live in or near Ōtepoti Dunedin?

YES? GOOD.

Then I absolutely insist you apply now for PONY CAMP.

You’ll take part in two whirlwind workshops led by ME, the one and only Freya Daly Sadgrove, in which you’ll collaborate on an original performance work that makes poetry POP.

And then? You’ll perform it, of course.

There are fifteen spaces available in this first ever PONY CAMP.

Do you want one?

ABOUT SHOW PONIES

“When the curtain call comes, it’s to applause that goes on and on and on”

—Bad Apple

Show Ponies exploded onto the Aotearoa literary scene for National Poetry Day 2019, in an event hailed by Ben Fagan of Motif Poetry as “a watershed moment for poetry in performance in Wellington.” The project has since performed sell-out shows at Verb Festival, Featherston Booktown, Brisbane Writers Festival, New Zealand Young Writers Festival, and Samesame But Different with Auckland Pride.

Led by Freya Daly Sadgrove, the concept of Show Ponies is simple: it’s poetry with the volume right up and the vibes off the scale. Aotearoa’s most engaging live poets perform their work in outrageous costumes, amongst bright lights, beats and backup dancers. The project puts poetry at the centre of a carefully orchestrated medley of dance, music, and theatre, and the result is freakin electrifying.

WHOLE NEW WOMAN

RELEASE THE WRITHING THING. BEGIN YOUR POWER.

“unapologetic, aggro and raw as hell”

—The Pantograph Punch

Freya Daly Sadgrove, author of Head Girl and ringleader of poetry extravaganza Show Ponies, unleashes her hilarious, unsettling, mesmerising performance style in her first full-length show.

Whole New Woman fiercely recontextualises seven poems from Head Girl alongside a suite of new work in a jaw-dropping hybrid of poetry, music and theatre.

The début season at BATS for NZ Fringe (March 2023) was nominated for eight Fringe Awards and seven Wellington Theatre Awards.
